Addressing Anti-Asian Hate

March 22, 2021

Dear FOP Community,

In the aftermath of the horrific Atlanta shootings, our thoughts are with the families and friends of Delaina Ashley Yuan, Paul Andre Michels, Xiaojie Yan, Daoyou Feng, Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Sun Cha Kim, and Yong Ae Yue. Their lives were lost in a senseless act of racism and sexism. We want to take time to address the hate that fueled not only this act but the thousands of anti-Asian attacks which have been reported in recent times. The racism and xenophobia we have witnessed have no place in our community, our nation, or our world.

We stand in solidarity with the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community. To the Asian-American members of FOP receiving this, know that FOP stands with you, supports you, and commits to raising awareness of systemic racism (both in the outdoors and at large). We hope that you and your families are all safe. We acknowledge that FOP is a predominantly white community and will continue to strive to make our spaces more inclusive to students from marginalized communities. We will continue to evaluate the ways in which we can become an anti-racist community and a community free from xenophobia, sexism, and classism. The work is nowhere near over.

As a Steering Committee, we are here for you. We want to reiterate that we are here in processing the recent events. If you want to talk, please email us. We have also attached a list of resources for supporting the AAPI Community.

In love and strength,
